For very few (less than 5%) who are allowed to register with a GED, the minimum score for the AFQT is 50. 95% of recruits must have a high school diploma. When a recruit enrolls in a GED, the minimum AFQT score is 47. In addition, the Coast Guard offers an E-2 Advanced Enrolment rank with at least 30 college credits; or E-3 with at least 60 college credits. However, this is a minimum score. Most of the selected candidates score much higher, usually above age 55. In fact, nearly three-quarters of candidates selected to join the Air Force achieve an AFQT of over 55. Compared to other branches of the U.S. military, the military accepts many more GED recruits.
